Alex Moreau is a Burgundy winemaker based in Chassagne-Montrachet and the proprietor of Domaine Alex Moreau. Widely recognised as part of the new generation of talented vignerons in the Côte d’Or, Alex is known for producing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines that are sensual, opulent, and precise—without sacrificing freshness or site expression.
After taking over the legendary family estate from his father, Alex began bottling wines under his own name and assumed full control of the vineyards, cellar, and winemaking. His rise has been swift, but firmly anchored in centuries of family history.

The roots of the Moreau family in Chassagne-Montrachet stretch back to 1809, when Auguste Moreau built the domaine’s first cellar across from the Champs Gain vineyard and farmed small parcels of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir along Burgundy’s famed golden slope.
In the 1930s, Marcel Moreau assembled the majority of what would become the family’s holdings, laying the foundation for the modern estate. The next defining chapter came in the early 1960s, when Marcel’s son, Bernard Moreau, took over the vineyards and cellar at just 14 years old.
By 1977, under the leadership of Bernard and his wife Françoise, the reputation of the estate was firmly established. For decades, Bernard Moreau was considered one of the benchmark producers of Chassagne-Montrachet—making it nearly impossible to discuss the appellation without mentioning his name.
Domaine Alex Moreau is the natural evolution of this heritage. After years working alongside his father, Alex gradually stepped into leadership before bottling under his own label and assuming full operational control of the estate.
In 2021, Domaine Bernard Moreau was divided between brothers Benoit and Alex Moreau. Alex emerged with 10.5 hectares of vines. This was followed by another significant change in 2023, when the expiration of a 20-year fermage agreement reduced the estate by approximately five hectares. This loss included the source of Alex’s Aligoté and Passetoutgrains, as well as a substantial portion of his Chassagne-Montrachet village wines.
The scale of the estate may have changed, but Alex’s philosophy has not. Precision, restraint, and respect for terroir remain unwavering.

Like most great Burgundian domaines, the emphasis at Domaine Alex Moreau is squarely on terroir. The estate’s most celebrated holding is its 0.35 hectares of Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Grandes Rouchotes, though the entire range showcases the appellation at its finest.
Alex believes that well-treated vineyards reward growers with superior fruit. To maintain healthy, balanced soils, the domaine uses organic fertilisers and avoids pesticides entirely. Lower yields are encouraged through careful pruning, debudding, and green harvesting in August. Pinot Noir vineyards receive targeted leaf thinning on the morning-sun side, while cover crops are planted in certain parcels to promote natural competition and regulate soil moisture.
Alex Moreau’s style is best described as hands-off but deeply intentional—a philosophy that values patience over intervention.
The white wines are defined by:
Long pressings
Vinification primarily in François Frères barrels
Spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts
An élevage of roughly one year in barrel, followed by six months on lees in tank
Bottling under natural cork
With additional cellar space in recent years, Alex has extended élevage for select cuvées, allowing greater texture, depth, and harmony to develop naturally.
For Pinot Noir, whole-bunch fermentation plays a significant role. Alex avoids racking, fining, and filtration entirely, explaining:
The result is wines of clarity, aromatic lift, and finely etched structure.
Several factors contribute to the growing demand for Alex Moreau’s wines:
A rare balance of opulence and precision
Deep roots in one of Burgundy’s most revered villages
Minimal-intervention winemaking that highlights site character
Limited production and shrinking vineyard holdings
Strong ageing potential, particularly for Chassagne-Montrachet whites
Collectors and sommeliers alike value the wines for their authenticity and sense of place—qualities that are increasingly rare.
Today, Alex Moreau and his wife Martine are the stewards of Domaine Alex Moreau. Alex leads all aspects of vineyard management, cellar work, and winemaking, while Martine plays an active and vital role in the business.
Together, they are shaping the future of the domaine—honouring a legacy more than two centuries old while ensuring its relevance for the next generation of Burgundy lovers.
